No hot water: what to check first

Before you call, check the breaker on an electric heater or the pilot on a gas one, and look for water around the tank. If the tank is leaking, shut the cold supply and call.

A few quick checks can save you a visit, or help us bring the right part.

Electric water heater

  • Check the breaker for the water heater at the panel. If it tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off and call.
  • Some heaters have a red reset button behind a panel on the side. Only press it with the power off at the breaker.

Gas water heater

  • Look through the small window at the bottom for the pilot flame.
  • If it's out, follow the relighting instructions on the label on the tank.
  • If it won't stay lit, or you smell gas, stop and call.

The label on the tank tells us the age, size and model. A photo of it helps.
