How do I test my sump pump?

Pour a bucket of water into the pit. The pump should start on its own, empty the pit and shut off. Test it every spring and fall.

  1. Make sure the pump is plugged in, and reset the GFCI outlet if it has tripped.
  2. Slowly pour a five-gallon bucket of water into the pit.
  3. The float should rise and the pump should start, empty the pit quickly and stop.
  4. Check outside that water is coming out of the discharge pipe, away from the house.
